Vera Brooks Elected to Illinois State Board of Directors for Sister Cities International

Director Brooks will serve a 3 year term with an option to serve an additional 3 years, but not succeeding a 6 year successive term. Director Brooks serves as the Village’s liaison to its Sister City Committee for its 2 year old Sister City, Cat Island, Bahamas. As part of her responsibilities as a Village liaison and newly elected Board Directors, Director Brooks attended the 61st Annual Sister Cities International Conference in July in Virginia. This year the Cat Island flag was presented to Sister City International Parade of Flags Coordinator, where it was represented among more than 500 U. S. cities that has partnered with more than 2000 partnerships worldwide, contributing to over $525Million to the U.S. economy each year. 

The conference consisted of presentations, workshops and visiting the US - Russian Summit’s welcome and the evening presentation of The History of U.S./Russia Sister Cities. This conference provided a variety of ideas of  increasing the Village’s school involvement with our sister city and in turn increase youth involvement and leadership through future programs.

The Village of Richton Park will began its Sister City’s youth programs in the fall via virtual class rooms starting with our high school students at Southland College Prep and Cat Island high school students and a pen pail workshop with elementary grade schools. Director Brooks will connect with the Board of Directors at the upcoming Illinois Sister City State Board meeting in September during the Illinois Municipal League Conference.
